12 Best Rated Robot Vacuum That Clean The Carpets Properly

C arpets and rugs serve multiple purposes, including decorating the house. They help enhance the appearance of your home while adding more comfort to your space. However, maintaining them clean can be pretty difficult, particularly if you have shedding pets. Depending on the material they are made from, some carpets can give you a real hard time while cleaning and removing pet hair. Advanced vacuum cleaners and carpet steam cleaners can handle the job, but what about robotic vacuums?

After we analyzed the most popular robot vacuums currently available, we selected the most effective models that can clean your carpets with ease. We took into account the climbing abilities, the suction intensity, as well as the efficiency of their brushes. And since they are automatic, they are convenient to use as you can arrange the housework whenever you want. Without further ado, we give you what we believe to be the most trustworthy models compared and reviewed by us.

What Makes a Robotic Vacuum Cleaner Great for Carpets?

While there are plenty of models on the market that promise great suction power or cutting-edge navigation systems, there are a few elements each robot should have if it is to be used on carpeted surfaces:

  • Big wheels – it needs to climb rugs and go from one room to another, so it is important that it can cross thresholds with a height of at least 0.6”.
  • Strong suction – this is a must. The model you pick needs to suck better than any on the market as dirt can be difficult to remove from carpet fibers. This is why most experts recommend picking a model that is rated for at least 2,000 Pascal.
  • High-efficiency filter – according to expert Mary Anne Dunkin at WebMD, a lot of the allergens responsible for allergies are found in the carpets, which makes it even more imperative to get them cleaned as often as possible. A HEPA filter in your robot ensures that all these airborne particles stay inside the bin and don’t get spread into the air in your house.
  • Brushes – it needs to be able to rub the carpets without destroying them, and this is why it must have a good set of brushes. If the brushroll can clean itself while cleaning, you’ve got your hands on a dream model.
  • Mapping – it isn’t enough to have a model that can avoid objects and stairs – it needs to understand the house and tell the living room from the hallway when you tell it to go cleaning it. This allows it to clean independently, which is the main reason you are buying a robot, isn’t it?
  • Autonomy – last but not least, it needs to have a big dust bin or even come with a self-emptying base so it can complete the job without any assistance on your part.

If you are ready to invest in a premium robot vacuum, then it’s time to take a good look at the Roomba i7+, which is, in fact, a cleaning kit, including both the robot and an upgraded docking base that doesn’t only allow the unit to recharge its batteries but to empty its bin without your assistance. With this last function incorporated, this robot is ready to handle heavy housework jobs and cover super large homes. It is the ideal pick for hardwood floors as well as for low- and medium-pile rugs it will climb without a problem, seeing how it has a maximum climb height of 0.78”

Don’t Think About Vacuuming for Weeks

What makes it a highly desired option despite the high price is its ability to clean without human assistance, and this is possible due to the subsequent features:

  • Advanced scheduling – not only that you will be able to select the days and the hours when the floor and carpet cleaning should take place but you can decide which rooms should be handled and which should be skipped. Thus, if you need your kitchen floor vacuumed more often, you can program the robot to sweep it more frequently than the other rooms in the house.
  • Self-emptying function – it has a 0.4L bin, which may seem small for a model that is rated to clean an area of up to 1,991 sq. ft. with a full battery, but this unit’s strength stands in the base’s ability to suck the dirt and dust from the robot’s bin whenever it returns to recharge. The dirt is deposited in a special bag that can contain up to 60 dust bins until it needs to be replaced. The package arrives with 2 replacement bags, but at some point, you will need to start buying them yourself, which will bring some additional costs, seeing how a 3-bag pack costs around $22. But, hey, you get weeks of relaxation during which you don’t need to think about floor cleaning, so we believe it is totally worth the financial effort.
  • Self-charges & resumes – while the self-charging feature isn’t truly a big deal for these robots, not many are smart enough to remember where they left the job and resume. Well, the i7 is definitely one of the cleverest, and it will not leave a job undone even if it needs to return to the base multiple times in one session.

It takes about 120 minutes for the battery to be fully charged, and this gives the i7 about 75 minutes of continuous run. If used in a studio or one room only, this may be enough to complete the job without docking. Nevertheless, it will clean large spaces pretty fast as well as the waiting time for a full charge isn’t that long.

Detailed Home Mapping

The main dissimilarity between the i7 and cheaper models is that it will always find its way around the house and never clean the same spot twice unintentionally.

  • VSlam navigation – is among the most advanced methods of room mapping and relies on a camera that takes pictures while the unit does the mapping of the house. Then, the robot looks for patterns in the pictures that help it understand how the space is organized. A geolocation system is also incorporated to help the i7 understand where, within the house, it is positioned at any moment.
  • Accurate detection sensors – it integrates cliff detection which tells it when descending stairs are approaching so it can reroute and avoid falls. Moreover, it can identify objects in its path so it can clean around them instead of bumping into them.
  • Virtual wall barrier – while the app allows you to set barriers by only drawing lines with your finger on the virtual map, the good old magnetic barrier is included in the pack so you can use it as extra protection for more delicate objects.
Deep 3-Stage Cleaning

What interests most is that the robot can perform a complete job, thoroughly cleaning the floors and carpets. This is possible with the i7’s strong suction power that reaches 1,800 Pa at the highest speed. Just to see how advanced this model is when compared with the oldest version, iRobot describes it as having a suction power 10 times stronger than the Roomba 600 series, which was a great hit at its time.

The i7 combines this power with a few extra features to deliver impeccable results:

  • Cleans dirt, debris, and dust – with the power-lifting suction feature, it can pick up both fine dust and pet dirt but heavier and larger debris like bread crumbs as well. It even comes with dirt-detect sensors that tell it if an area is too dirty and it needs to insist on it.
  • Sweeps the edges – it is equipped with an Edge-sweeping brush that extends so it can reach corners and edges to get them cleaned efficiently.
  • Makes personalized suggestions based on your cleaning habits – through the app, you will receive tips and suggestions related to seasonal cleaning or how to deal with pet shedding.

It uses a high-performance filter that has an efficiency of over 99% against the most common allergens that are often released by pets. Moreover, the unique design of the brushes, which flex and adjust so they never lose contact with the carpets, allows it to clean pet hair without getting tangled in it.

Smart Control

You can tell the unit to clean by pressing the button on its upper front side, but there are more convenient ways to send it to vacuum:

  • Works with Google Assistant and Alexa – if you install the Alexa hub or connect the unit to Google Assistant, you can give it vocal commands. For example, you can tell it to start cleaning or clean a certain room, all without having to press any button.
  • Comes with a comprehensive app – you can also see the map and set boundaries in the iRobot Home App. Here, you will also find recommendations and will be able to pick the days and hours at which the vacuuming should start.

We must admit that this model isn’t the quietest. In fact, it produces a sound that comes close to 68 decibels when operating, so you will know that it is there. On the other hand, seeing how advanced its scheduling function is, we don’t see why you wouldn’t program it to run while you are not at home. With this technology, there’s no need to know how the carpets get to feel so clean and fresh. This model comes with a 1-year warranty.

Performance Results – What Do Testers Say?

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is definitely the option to go with if you love feeling the coziness of carpets under your feet. There were two things we were curious about before testing – if it can get flour out of a medium-pile carpet, and if it can cover our pretty large office space without requiring our intervention.

Well, we put it to work. We made a little test with it a few days before, so it already got the chance to move around and map the premises. The first task was for it to go through every room of the office (there were 4 of them, and the only room that had carpeting was the conference room.) and gather the debris and dust on the floors. Nothing fancy, we didn’t add extra dirt or something, we just wanted to see how it would work in a normal house.

It took it about 1 hour and a half to cover everything, without counting the 2 hours it spent recharging when it ran out of power, but it did a terrific job, managing to collect the dust even on the edges and corner. The bin was still half-empty, as it is a pretty generous one, so we decided to put it to a more serious trial. For this, we poured flour on our beautiful blue conference room carpet, and for a moment, we thought that the only way we were going to get it out was with a commercial upright vacuum cleaner. But, I7+ did the job. We activated Spot cleaning, and it ran a few times over the spot with the flour, managing to get almost all out. At some point, the bin was full, and it automatically head to the basis to get it discharged. Just a little whoosh and the floor was out in the dust bag. Roomba was back to work in a minute and kept going until there was no more flour on the carpet.

Braden Ewing – Editor-In-Chief and Product Tester

PROS

  • The base automatically discharges the bin, allowing the robot to keep cleaning until the job is done
  • Quick charging time, good battery life
  • Top-notch navigation technology allows it to clean impeccably without bumping into objects or falling
  • Easy scheduling with voice or app control
  • Dependable suction combined with adjustable brushes guarantees success on almost any type of carpets

CONS

  • You will hear it when it cleans, as it is not among the quietest models
  • This kit requires replacement bags that will increase the operational cost a bit, but the convenience it brings is totally worth the expense

Verdict

If there’s one thing the i7 can guarantee is that your socks will remain dust and dirt-free, even if you are living in a home with pets. It has good suction, powerful brushes, and a system to clean even the corners and edges. Plus, it comes with one of the most forward-looking navigation systems, which allows it to clean the floors efficiently while protecting the objects around.

ECOVACS presents an impressive robot that can handle both vacuuming and wiping efficiently and cover spaces as large as 3,200 sq. ft. in one run with a full battery. It is sold separately from the upgraded landing station that allows it to self-empty, but you can choose to add it to your purchase if you only want to deal with the dirt it gathers only once a few weeks. If you are not willing to spend the extra money, this will not affect in any way the robot’s running, as the kit comprises a regular docking post that allows it to recharge. The Deebot OZMO T8 AIVI has a fairly large 0.42L dust bin, which allows it to store a lot of dust and debris before needing to be discharged.

More Accurate Object Identification

Compared with the previous versions, the new DEEBOT is better at spotting the objects in its path and uses more advanced algorithms when it comes to mapping the house.

  • AIVI technology – this Artificial Intelligence and Visual Interpretation technology was designed in-home by ECOVACS, and the company is very proud of it. It implies using a built-in optical lens to visually recognize common objects that are found around the house like socks, cables, chairs, etc. The robot compares them with the pictures of objects that are stored in the ECOVACS cloud to see if they are considered obstructions and need to be avoided. The ECOVACS database is constantly improving, making this technology probably the most reliable when it comes to precise object recognition.
  • TrueMapping – it will scan your home 2 times faster and with a precision that is 4 times higher compared to standard mapping. This is possible with the blend of laser technology and a set of dTOF sensors that scan the house in 3D and help enhance the camera image.
  • Extensive set of sensors – besides the sensors used for navigation and mapping, it incorporates six anti-drop sensors that prevent it from dropping down the stairs and a carpet detection sensor that identifies rugs and tells the robot that it needs to increase power to deal with the dirt hidden among the fibers.

The OZMO T8 has a battery life of 3 hours, and it needs 4 hours to fully recharge. Just like most vacuum robots, it reverts to the docking port on its own when it reaches a pre-established battery level to avoid running out of energy on its way. It also remembers where it left its job so it can continue it when the battery is charged.

Keep in Touch with Your Pet Even When You Are Not at Home

This model comes with a huge benefit. Namely, it allows you to use it as a security device to see what is happening around the house when you are at work. With the help of the dedicated app, you will get access to the following:

  • Built-in camera – the camera it uses for mapping doesn’t only take pictures but can record live videos you can stream live on your phone. Thus, you can check on your pet and make sure they are doing alright, or take a quick peep around the house and make sure no one is trespassing in case you suspect this may happen.
  • Built-in speaker – it allows you to say hi to your pet and make their waiting easier. If you detect intruders, just a few words transmitted through the robot’s speaker may determine them to abandon their mission and flee.
Advanced Cleaning Customization with the ECOVACS App

You can use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to tell the unit what to do, and this is probably the simplest way to control it. Nevertheless, you will get admission to a lot of other functions if you install the ECOVACS app:

  • Divide or merge areas – once the unit completes mapping the house, you will be able to see the map on your phone. Here, you can create separate spaces and name them so the robot knows what part of the house you need it to scrub. You can add barriers if you need one part of a room cleaned in one session and the other in another or merge areas if you want them cleaned simultaneously.
  • Set no-go zones – you can designate some zones as untouchable, and the robot will not vacuum them. For instance, you can instruct it not to go around a pile of clothes you’ve stored in the middle of the room, so there will not be necessary to tidy the room before using it.
  • Set no-mop zones – you don’t need it to wipe your carpets, or you may have some more pretentious areas. Use this function to ensure the mopping stops when the robot crosses them.
  • Adjust water flow for distinct rooms – you don’t need it to release the same amount of water when mopping on tiles as it does on hardwood. Luckily, you can decide how much water it should sprinkle. The 240 mL reservoir is large enough to cover a room of over 2,000 sq. ft.
  • Schedule different cleaning times – it allows you to clean some rooms in one day and others at a different moment in the week. It is up to you to decide how often should the cleaning be performed.
  • Select cleaning power – the app allows you to select the level of suction it should apply on various surfaces. Thus, if you just had a party and need it to perform a deep cleaning, you can select maximum pressure.

The incorporated filter eliminates airborne particles that may cause respiratory problems. You will find the filters very easy to clean, and maintenance, in general, is simple. The warranty offered, in this case, is 1 year.

PROS

  • Ultra-performant navigation technology makes it fast and efficient
  • It is well-suited with Amazon Echo and Google Assistant
  • You can effortlessly adjust it with the help of the app
  • Integrates a camera and a speaker that allow you to stay connected to what is happening inside your house
  • Short charging period

CONS

  • It only uses water for mopping (no cleaning solution accepted)
  • The dust container doesn’t come with a sensor to let you know when it is full

Verdict

Resourceful and smart, this robot is a premium pick for floor and rug cleaning. It employs super-advanced mapping technology and comes with a great app that allows you to schedule it according to your preferences. Plus, it has a mop function that will leave your surfaces shining after each cleaning session.

Another premium model that comes as a strong competition to the i7+, the Roborock S6 is a fierce solution to dirty low- and high-pile rugs. It emits only 50 dB when operating at a normal speed so the chances are that you will forget it is cleaning the bedrooms while you relax for a moment on the couch. It is armed with everything a high-budget model should offer, so you can expect strong suction power, vigorous brushes, and a reliable battery that allows it to cover as much of the job as possible before needing to recharge.

Vacuuming & Mopping in One Compact Robot

For the price, the wiping function is truly a bonus, and many customers seem to appreciate it greatly, as there’s no need to invest in a robotic mop to keep things just as easy. Plus, they get to use the extra storage space for other appliances while enjoying the following advantages:

  • 2,000 Pa suction power – this is the maximum it can reach and, according to the builder, this suction level is enough for it to lift AA batteries from the floor, so it is easy to see why it won’t have any problems dealing with dust, dirt, crumbs, and other debris.
  • Excellent area coverage – the battery is fully charged in about 4 hours and allows the unit to clean for about 3 hours before needing more energy. This translates into its ability to cover a space of about 2,690 sq. ft. in one run, which makes it a wonderful pick for hefty homes.
  • Carpet mode – cleaning carpets is just a routine chore for this model due to the carpet pressurization function it integrates. To put it simpler, it comes with a sensor that lets it know when it is about to enter a carpeted area so it can increase suction power and vacuum all the dirt stuck in the carpet’s fibers.
  • High-performance filter – another important element, the filter is the one ensuring that the dust that is collected doesn’t end up back in the air, and this unit comes with one of the most efficient models, which can trap about 95% of the aerial elements down to 0.3 microns.

The S6 can climb thresholds that are as high as 0.78” so it will have no problem going from one room to another. Moreover, it comes with a fairly generous dust bin, which can collect up to 0.48L of dirt, so it can deal with large surfaces without requiring you to empty it too often.

Quickly Finds Its Way Around the House

The S6 doesn’t waste any time and doesn’t miss any spot, as it is provided with one of the most advanced mapping technologies, designed to help it clean using a pre-established zig-zag pattern, thus covering both the edges and the center of the room.

  • Adaptive routing technology – it can identify if the room has a square or an elongated shape and decide which is the best route to clean it. For instance, if it needs to vacuum a hallway, it will move from one end of the hall to the other instead of doing short trips on the width that would take longer without delivering better results.
  • Top-notch infrared sensors – it integrates an accuracy laser rangefinder that lets it know when it is moving toward an obstacle so it can decelerate and avoid them. The cliff sensors are also present, telling it when it needs to reroute to avoid stairs or another surface that is lower than the height level at which it has been cleaning.
  • Self-charges and resumes – when the battery is getting low, it returns to the docking station for more momentum, but doesn’t forget that it has a job to do and restarts from where it has left it once the battery is full.

It will scan the whole house and create detailed maps that can comprise multiple house levels. Then, you can use the app to select the rooms where it should clean and establish boundaries for the spots it should avoid. The robot will automatically recognize them the next time it runs.

Simple Control from the Distance

There’s a button on top of the unit that allows it to set it cleaning without using any other control device, but there’s so much more you could enjoy if you decide to use a hub like Alexa or your phone. Let’s explore these options briefly:

  • Give it voice commands – you can just say ‘Hey Google. Start vacuum in the kitchen.’, and your robot will head to the designated room and start cleaning. It is compatible with Alexa as well.
  • Schedule it to clean from your phone – the Mi Home App allows you to see the map of your house, establish boundaries and program the unit to clean in days and at hours you’ve selected. For example, you can schedule it to vacuum every day at 10 if you have pets or only Monday and Tuesday if your home isn’t too trafficked. You can also select the rooms that need to be cleaned more often.

One thing you need to remember is that this model doesn’t have an ultra-slim profile. In fact, it measures 3.8” in height so it may be problematic to get it to clean under low-profile furniture. On the other hand, you don’t need to fear that it may leave water marks when mopping as it spreads the water evenly, as it goes, without creating puddles. Even when it recharges, the base is designed in a way that would prevent leaks in case they occur.

PROS

  • Powerful suction allows it to clean all types of carpets
  • Quickly scans the house and creates multi-level maps that help it navigate efficiently
  • Great battery life makes it ideal for large homes
  • Can be scheduled to clean only certain rooms and can be controlled only by voice
  • Mop function completes the vacuuming, guaranteeing impeccable floors at the end of the operation

CONS

  • May not fit under low-profile furniture as it is rather tall
  • The app is quite basic

Verdict

You are looking at one of the most advanced robot vacuums of the moment, which can flawlessly clean the floors and do an excellent job on most of the carpets. The S6 is preceded by the great reviews its previous version received, and it totally raises to the expectations, offering strong suction, dependable navigation, and simple scheduling.

No doubt about it, this vacuum works great on carpets, and it manages to deal with the thickest fibers. It features a good climbing height of 0.74”. This allows it to climb thick carpets and rugs with absolutely no problem. The overall dimensions, 12.5 x 3.9 x 13.2 inches, make it a great choice every time you want to clean underneath short furniture pieces, although it’s not the shortest out there.

The intelligent LaserSmart mapping system helps it clean the room in straight lines without getting confused. It can adapt to any flooring material, while the groundbreaking D-shape allows it to scrub dirt from corners with ease, something rounded robots can hardly do. The combo brush and the lateral brush contribute to its efficiency. All the dirt will go into the generous 0.7 liters dust compartment, the largest from our selection of robots.

With a 2,000 Pa suction power, it can get deep into the rugs and suck out the dirt, leaving nothing but cleanliness behind. You get to pick between two cleaning modes: the turbo mode provides superior suction for removing hair and dust even from the thickest rugs, while the eco mode reduces the noise and helps save energy.
In an average-sized home, you will get around 120 minutes of intense cleaning after the robot has recharged for 150 minutes. Once the power runs low, it immediately heads to the docking station, and it resumes cleaning after having fully charged, so it won’t miss an inch.

  • The dust compartment is extra-large
  • Fitted with the innovative LaserSmart guidance system
  • Wi-Fi enabled for intuitive distance control
  • The HEPA filter acts as a dust capturer
  • State-of-the-art D-shape for dealing with corners

CONS

  • The app still has some bugs that need to be resolved
  • The setup process is a bit complicated

Verdict

This model can clean rugs and carpets with ease and it transitions from hard floors to carpet without any difficulty. The increased suction makes it the perfect assistant for pet owners as it can gather pet hair from fibers. The app still needs some improvements but it is functional and will help you control the robot with ease.

Made by Samsung, this robot is among the best you can get if you want to effortlessly clean your carpets. The design is innovative, combining the round and the D shape for a detailed edge and corner scrubbing. Measuring 13.7 x 13.4 x 3.8 inches, it can easily get underneath pieces of furniture. It boasts an LCD on top, where you can visualize information on the cleaning cycle, battery status, or time.

The smart direction-finding system enables it to find the best cleaning path every time you turn it on. It successfully navigates obstacles. To do so, it relies on the advanced Visionary Mapping and Full View Sensor 2.0 technologies that involve a camera and several sensors that enable the robot to observe the surroundings and create a map. It can straightforwardly climb impediments and the edges of carpets, so it transitions from one surface to another. An interesting feature is a shutter that extends so it can easily reach dirt in corners and wall edges. Also, it delivers constant power while reducing clogging, being able to collect dirt into an outer chamber. The dirt bin’s capacity is not very large, only 0.3 liters, so you might need to discharge it more often than expected. The brush size is maximized, so it can cover a bigger area, and it can routinely clean itself by removing hair tangles.

What makes it a great choice for carpets is the fact that it can optimize the suction intensity contingent on the surface it detects. Few other models can do this. Responsible for this outstanding suction is the Cyclone Force technology. It has 3 vacuuming modes: spot, manual, and auto. You can also control the suction level, having the possibility to choose from quiet, normal, and maximum suction. Using either your phone or an app like Alexa or Google Assistant, you can set it to start at any time, even from away from home.

The battery is very resilient; it lasts for 90 minutes for intense cleaning, but take note that it will take 4 hours to recharge completely. Once the power runs low, this smart device will return to the base, and it can also resume cleaning. Once you purchase it, your acquisition will be protected for 1 year by the warranty.

PROS

  • Automatically identifies the surface type and adjusts the suction power
  • Includes a self-cleaning brush with a width of 11.4 inches
  • Features CycloneForce technology that separates dirt into a special chamber
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • An innovative edge-cleaning system
  • The big wheels help it transition to thick carpets with ease

CONS

  • Setting up the app may pose some difficulties
  • It takes very long to recharge

Verdict

Overall, this is a resilient automatic vacuum that does its job. It has many features that are meant to improve its performance. It immediately intensifies the suction stage when it identifies soft surfaces like rugs and can effortlessly climb thick rugs. Unfortunately, one drawback is the size of the docking station which is pretty larger.

  • Scheduling:
  • Voice Control: Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • App Control: Shark Clean App
  • Remote:
  • Self Charging:
  • Resume Cleaning:
  • Mopping Function:
  • Warranty: 1 year

The Shark IQ Robot RV1001 is a nice upgrade from the Shark ION Robot RV761 to which the manufacturer has added a better navigation system and a larger dust bin. This version can steer better and faster and uses a row-by-row pattern that allows it to cover the space more efficiently by 50%. It can also clean multiple rooms and maps the space, allowing you to select which room should be cleaned and which to be skipped.

Just like the previous version we mentioned, it comes with a dedicated app and is compatible with the Echo Dot hub (you need to pay extra for it), which allows you to automatize its operation. This allows you to give it commands through Alexa or Google Assistant like, for instance, tell it to start cleaning or activate a certain mode.

The IQ Robot RV1001 has a better run time, being able to clean for about 60 minutes if used on Max mode and up to 160 minutes on Eco mode. This means that it can clean a pretty large space before returning to the base to recharge. Unfortunately, it has a longer charge time which can extend up to 5 hours. When the battery is full, it remembers that it still has work to do and picks up from the point it left.

The manufacturer says that it has better suction as well but doesn’t give a number, so it is difficult to assess how powerful it is compared to the previous version. Nonetheless, the customers’ reviews are good, and you can expect it to do well on hardwood floors and even on medium or low pile carpets. It includes a self-cleaning brush that can handle long hairs fur, but the system isn’t unbeatable, so from time to time you may need to remove the hair by hand. The corners and the edges are handled by a set of side brushes that are angled to reach the tight spots better.

Last but not least, this model is fitted with a high-efficiency filter, designed to keep the dust inside the 0.75L bin. It is not a washable filter, so you will need to replace it periodically. The warranty offered by the manufacturer is the standard 1 year.

PROS

  • Large dust bin allows it to clean larger spaces without requiring your assistance
  • The main brush cleans itself so it will get stuck more seldom
  • Compatible with voice directions
  • Eco mode allows it to clean more quietly while using less power
  • The navigation system has improved since the previous version

CONS

  • It takes a lot of time to create a complete map of the house
  • It is pretty loud, especially if you use it on Max mode

Verdict

The Shark IQ RV1001 integrates the most desirable functions in a robot vacuum but maintains a more affordable price. While it is true that it cannot map the house in just a few runs and it struggles a bit more when it comes to finding its path than the first models in our top, customers say that it has great suction and that it can successfully deal with pet hair.

If you want a model that performs a deep clean on your carpets without damaging them or without getting tangled in the tassels, then your search has stopped. Roomba 981 brings many features that improve its overall performance not only on carpets but on a wide diversity of floors.

Appearance

The lovely design and the numerous accessories make it a really convenient option for many years. It looks nice, it is 3.58 inches tall and 14 inches wide, so it can effortlessly sneak underneath objects and furniture. The dustbin is positioned at the top for easy access and discharging, and the exterior is scratch-resistant. The top button offers you the option to set it quickly.

Performance

There are few robots as forward-thinking as this one, which comes equipped with the latest discoveries in this field, being a nice addition to any smart home. Here are some of the most impressive features related to its cleaning performance:

  • Power-lifting suction – the robust motor manages to lift 10x more debris, ensuring nothing is left behind.
  • Power Boost – it routinely intensifies the drawing power to reach deep into the carpets.
  • The bottom part is fitted with state-of-the-art brushes, namely a set of two rubber brushes that flex and adapt to the surface they reach so that they maintain permanent contact. This enables the switch from carpet to wood or tile by adjusting its height, so it can perform flawlessly on any surface.
  • The premium 3-phase cleaning involves a series of rotations and movements of the brushes that cooperate to guarantee maximum floor coverage. The rubber captures all sorts of debris, including pet hair and larger bits that are immediately sent to the generous 0.6L dust bin.
Long-lasting battery

When you decide to get a robot for cleaning your rugs, the first thing that arouses your interest surely is the lifespan of the battery, after a complete charge. The Roomba 981 relies on a strong lithium battery that takes only 180 minutes to recharge completely, and it will last for 2 hours of a thorough cleaning.

Once it finishes, it goes back to the charging base by itself. If it happens to remain out of battery during a cleaning session, it goes to the charging dock, and then it retakes the process from where it left it to avoid wasting energy or skipping an area.

Smart housework

The primary benefit of this household asset is that it brings the smartest features into the comfort of your home. First of all, it can be linked to the internet through a Wi-Fi network, so you can access it through your phone even when you are away from home. Moreover, it learns your cleaning habits so it can create a personalized routine, while you can use Google Assistant and Alexa to make voice commands for cleaning.

Equipped with a bunch of sensors, it immediately detects high-traffic areas and stubborn spots and insists on cleaning until everything is removed. Speaking of sensors, it never falls off the stairs, and it doesn’t get tangled in tassels or over doorsteps as it can recognize obstructions.

The intelligent robot can create its own trajectory around the house, so it won’t rotate in circles or clean randomly. With the iAdapt 2. and vSLAM technology, it uses an infrared camera to take snapshots of the surroundings and create a map. However, it doesn’t allow you to create separate cleaning schedules for different rooms. If it starts cleaning, it will go to the next room once it’s done, so it’s a whole-house cleaner, not a single-room vacuum.

PROS

  • Up to 10x more power on rugs
  • Features a 3-stage cleaning cycle
  • Comes with two wide-coverage brushes
  • Retains up to 99% of all particles
  • It can be accessed through the internet
  • Features dirt detection technology

CONS

  • Not good at cleaning very dark rooms
  • You can’t set it for different rooms

Verdict

This is a powerful vacuum with a lengthy battery lifetime. It operates amazingly on carpets and it covers multiple rooms in your home without assistance. Can be maneuvered via the smartphone and is smart-home connected. However, you have to be willing to pay more money, but you will shortly notice it is well worth the investment.

Pet owners know how difficult it can be to remove their beloved companions’ hair from carpets and fluffy rugs. This will no longer be an issue due to this powerful vacuum that does wonders taking out pet hair from carpets. It manages to do so with a set of rotating brushes that collect debris of any size, even the hidden one. Plus, it has 3 speeds and 4 operating modes (auto, spot, edge, manual) that adapt to each type of surface you place it on. The Eco speed is ideal for tiles and hard floors, the Normal speed works on thin carpets, while the High speed is designed for thick carpets and hard-to-remove messes, including stubborn pet hair. Impurities will be passed through a HEPA filter before going into the generous 0.6L dustbin so the air in the room will remain clean.

To use its energy wisely, it relies on smart technology to create a map so it will clean efficiently and without returning to a place it has already cleaned. The results are enhanced with two essential features, the Edge cleaning and the Spot cleaning. The first one involves rotating brushes that gather and drag towards the suction area all the dirt it finds near the wall edges and in corners. The second allows the device to insist on a certain spot until it manages to remove it. Don’t worry about it falling off the stairs, because this will not happen thanks to the Stair-Sensing Technology that redirects it to plain and safe areas.

It’s one of the slimmest models out there, measuring 13” in diameter and only 3” high, so it won’t have trouble cleaning under beds or cabinets. It can be wirelessly connected to an internet network so you can use voice instructions or an app like Alexa or Google Home to control it. The battery, a lithium type, takes around 3.5 h to charge, and it should be enough for approximately 2 hours of cleaning. As soon as it runs out of power, it goes to the charging port by itself, so it can retake the cleaning once the battery is full again. You will also appreciate the boundary strips that allow you to designate areas in the house where the vacuum will not be allowed.

PROS

  • A smart guidance system and anti-impact sensing
  • Features 3 brushes and a potent suction system
  • 4 working methods
  • It’s ideal for gathering pet hair
  • It is enhanced with 2 filters

CONS

  • May not always show the errors on the display
  • It can’t untangle, so you have to help it in case it gets stuck with wires

Verdict

Since it brings so many amazing features, this model is worth considering if you have pets and wish to keep your home clean. It’s an intelligent robot that can be accessed remotely, and it packs multiple cleaning technologies for delivering the best results.

With 1,300Pa of suction, this is one of the most powerful models made by Eufy. It manages to pack an increased vacuuming power inside a compact housing that measures only 12.8” wide and 2.85” in height. Therefore, it can scrub and suck the debris from any area with ease and leave your house spotlessly clean. To trap not only the large bits but also the small ones that might affect air quality, the device includes a triple-filter system.

You can choose one of the 5 available cleaning methods that provide efficient cleaning: auto, spot, edge, single room, and manual. Additionally, the BoostIQ feature increases the suction power whenever more vacuuming strength is needed. This is really great, particularly if you have thick rugs. The BoostIQ can be activated in auto and single room modes.

Once the battery runs low, it will immediately return to the docking station but it will not resume the cleaning process. Unfortunately, it will take 6 hours for a full charge, so you might want to leave it overnight. The battery capacity is 100 minutes, which is quite remarkable. Once it is charged, it starts cleaning from the beginning, as it can’t resume from where it was left.

You will not be able to control the ILIFE V3s Pro through voice commands or a smartphone app, as this is mainly a budget model, but as many customers who got the chance to test it pointed out, it is an exceptional cleaning machine when dealing with basically any type of dirt on hardwood and low pile carpets. It has good suction – 1,000 Pa – and features 4 modes, each suitable for a different messy situation.

This makes it a nice option for a home where there isn’t a lot of carpeting and where it can just run from one room to another and perform maintenance cleaning. The run time is quite generous, seeing how it can clean for up to an hour and a half before docking for more energy. On the other hand, it does take it 200 to 300 minutes to get a full battery, which can be an inconvenience if you are in a hurry, especially as it doesn’t remember when it left the job and won’t return to it on its own.

It has a low-profile design that allows it to slide under furniture without getting stuck and perform better cleaning. The anti-bump sensors ensure that it ‘sees’ objects so it can slow down and avoid collisions. It is equipped with anti-fall sensors as well, which help it identify stairs and avoid falling on them. Just like most cleaners, it comes with a dust filter that needs to be replaced periodically. It is backed by a 1-year U.S. warranty.

PROS

  • Great suction on hardwood floors and thin carpets
  • Can clean under furniture due to the low-profile design
  • Good battery life
  • Integrates 4 cleaning modes so you can customize its run

CONS

  • Not fit for thick carpets
  • No Wi-Fi compatibility

Verdict

You should pick this model if you are planning on using it on hardwood floors and low-pile carpets. It is great at vacuuming all sorts of debris and dirt and will maintain your home spotlessly. While there is nothing fancy about it – no Wi-Fi, no app, no voice commands – it does its job well, and it does come at a good price that makes it a worthy acquisition.

Rating Our Picks

To keep your carpets neat and clean, you need a robot with increased suction ability. Regularly vacuuming the rugs will not only remove dirt and dust but will also preserve the air in your house fresh and clean. The advantage of an automatic vacuum is that the vacuuming process and timetable can be created as you prefer – once a day or several times a week – and it will clean the entire house for you. Anyway, for satisfying results in cleaning the carpets, these robots need some extra features.

Rating Criteria
Description
Model to Go With
Strong Suction
A robot with good suction can effectively remove dirt with just one pass. Maintaining a high suction during the cleaning cycle is definitely a plus as well as the possibility to increase suction. Therefore, some models allow you to increase the vacuuming strength for cleaning dirtier carpets or high-traffic areas. While certain vacuums have turbo or max modes, others have functions like carpet boost or BoostIQ. Some models can automatically adjust the suction according to the surface identified. The brushes play an important role as well as they agitate the carpet fiber and lift the dust and dirt, so the robots can pick them more efficiently.
Almost all models can increase their power suction to deliver a better cleaning performance.
Climbing Abilities
This refers to the ability of the robot to switch from hard floors like wood or tile to carpets or to climb over thresholds without remaining stuck. If you have more rugs, you need a model that can climb different obstacles with ease. Because you can set it to start when you’re away, a robot with a poor redirecting ability is not very useful. Therefore, we only selected those models that can climb obstacles up to 0.60 inches quickly and effortlessly.
Direction-Finding Software
The basic direction-finding system is based on sensors for stairs or obstructions that help the robot avoid collision with objects encountered in its cleaning route and prevent it from falling off the stairs. A useful model can navigate without hitting things or getting stuck. Anyway, for protecting the objects and the housing from cracks, most devices are fortified with bumpers. The most cutting-edge robots come with accurate navigation software – they even have integrated cameras – that assists them in finding the most timesaving route and finish their job faster.
Filter Performance
When vacuuming, some dust and allergens are released back into the air, thus affecting the indoor air quality. For this reason, most cleaners have incorporated filters to trap these microscopic particles. The most competent filters are the HEPA ones as they can remove up to 99.97% of particles, including the invisible ones measuring 0.3 microns. Some versions include more filters to make sure a significant quantity of particles is trapped inside.
Battery Life
These robots run on batteries, so make sure the power won’t let you down when you less expect it. Therefore, make sure you analyze the lifespan and charging time required. On average, a battery can last for 1-1.5 hours of medium-strength cleaning, contingent on the size of the room. If you live in a big house, you might need a longer-lasting battery, but a medium-sized house should be a match for a robot that lasts at least 1 hour. The charging for some models takes 2 or 3 hours, but there are also versions that need 4 or 6 hours to refill. Moreover, we picked models that return to the charging base on their own and later continue cleaning, so the process will not be interrupted and left unfinished.
The Dimensions of the Dust Compartment
Clearing the dust bin during the cleaning cycle can be rather inconvenient. For this reason, the robot should have a hefty compartment to collect more dirt and debris. Of course, if you live in a small house you may not need the biggest dust bin, an average one will do, especially if you clean regularly. Anyway, this aspect is worth bearing in mind if you want to stress less over the vacuum.

Health Risks of Dirty Carpets and How Automatic Vacuum Cleaners Help

Carpets can trap a large amount of dust, and so they are considered a great method to reduce dust in the air – contrary to the common belief that carpets can cause allergies. Anyway, they still need to be cleaned regularly, otherwise, carpets and rugs that become too dirty can put your health at risk. Unlike the traditional vacuum cleaners, the automatic ones come with some nice improvements, especially those designed to be highly effective on carpets.

Health Dangers
Robot Advantages
  • Itchy skin & rashes: not cleaning the capers regularly can cause certain skin irritations like rashes, dermatitis, or athlete’s foot.
  • Breathing difficulties: dusty carpets can easily release dust when walking on them or even when you dust them. This may lead to all sorts of respiratory problems like dyspnea.
  • Weak immune system: unclean carpets can eventually weaken your immune system as it constantly fights germs and bacteria. As a result, you may start feeling exhausted.
  • Clean indoor air: vacuum cleaners release dust back into the air but robotic vacuum cleaners have filters that can successfully trap small particles and keep your indoor air clean.
  • Regular cleaning: the cutting-edge robots can be programmed to clean as often as you want. This will help keep your carpets clean without hassle.
  • Increased suction: : some units allow you to increase the suction when cleaning the rugs and rugs or when dealing with dirtier areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are robot vacuums good on carpets?
There are a few conditions vacuums need to meet to be efficient on carpets. First, they need to be able to climb them, so they should manage to cross thresholds that are at least 0.5” high. Secondly, they must have good suction as it is more difficult for the dirt to be vacuumed when it is caught inside the carpet’s fibers. And last but not least, they must come with a dependable set of brushes that can rub the carpets and help remove stains. All the robots in this top meet the conditions and are effective on most types of carpets.

Do robot vacuums damage carpets?
No. These robots are conceived to gently clean the rugs without causing spotty patches or rip off fibers. Nevertheless, they are intended to work on carpets that are in good condition, so you should never use yours on a carpet that is too old or damaged as this can cause the unit to get stuck.

Can robot vacuums go from hardwood to carpet?
Yes. Most models automatically transition between different surfaces and will do it without a problem. Some even have special sensors that detect the rugs and tell the robot to boost suction so the cleaning is more efficient.

Do robot vacuums work on high pile carpets?
These types of carpets are often problematic as the brushes tend to get twisted in the fibers. However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a robot that can handle the job. For example, Samsung POWERbot R7070 is a great pick with its high climb height and incredibly high suction.

Which robot vacuum is most reliable?
You can never go wrong with a Roomba, and the iRobot Roomba i7+ is a great investment that will totally pay off in the long run. It has great suction and a trustworthy set of brushes that help it remove even the most stubborn dirt in carpets. Besides all these, you can rely on it never to miss a spot due to the advanced navigation technology it integrates.

How long do robot vacuums last?
The lifespan may differ contingent on the quality of the product and how well it was maintained. Usually, an average vacuum lives for about 5 years, but a high-end model that was well cared for can have a life duration of about 8 years.

Do robot vacuums learn your house?
Yes, some of them do. If you decide on a robot with intelligent navigation, it will use a camera and/or a set of sensors to see the setting and generate a map of the house. You will be able to see the map on your phone and set no-go zones. The unit uses then the map every time it cleans to steer around the house.

Is a self-emptying robot vacuum worth it?
It is, if you are a comfortable person who is not a big fan of tidying around or doing chores. A self-emptying robot comes with a special base that vacuums the dirt out of the dust container every time the robot returns to recharge. The dirt is deposited in a large bag that needs to be replaced once a few weeks or even months, contingent on how often the robot is used, and this allows the unit to do its job on schedule without requiring your assistance at all.

Which robot vacuum is quietest?
Eufy RoboVac 11S emits only 55 dB when vacuuming while maintaining a great suction power of 1,300 Pa, so it is a nice match for homes with pets or kids due to its quietness. According to the Decibel Level Comparison Chart developed by Yale University, the correspondent of 55 dB is the sound made by a home refrigerator.
