11 Best Rated Robot Vacuums to Clean Hardwood Floors

C leaning hardwood floors is not very difficult, but it requires vacuuming and mopping regularly. For hassle-free cleaning, we recommend a robotic vacuum specially created to deal with hardwood floors. A good model should feature a strong suction and the ability to clean the edges and corners. Additionally, a large litterbin and a long battery life are great pluses.

There’s a robot vacuum for every need, so finding one that successfully deals with hardwood flooring wasn’t that difficult. The models selected by us are made by trustworthy brands and come with many positive reviews from the customers who bought and tried them.

We ranked them according to performance, battery, brushes quality, and so on. Then, we highlighted both the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. All this is to help you select the model that best suits your needs.

Why Is Hardwood Floor Cleaning So Important?

You may think that running a vacuum cleaner over hardwood floors a few times a week, as experts recommend, may be a bit exaggerated, but the truth is that this is the only way you can maintain it in pristine condition for longer, and here is why:

  • The color of the hardwood can trick you into thinking that it is clean – it is more difficult to spot dirt on floors than on carpets, but this doesn’t mean that it isn’t there. In fact, grit can gather around your precious wooden floors and scuff them until it wears the finish. This is one way to end up with ‘tired’ floors.
  • Even if it looks clean, it doesn’t necessary means that it is sanitary – if you have pets, their paws and nose are excellent bacteria spreaders and, according to specialist Stephen C. Eppes, MD, who is cited by KidsHealth, your kids can easily come up with digestive problems or skin infections if you let them play on the floor.
  • You don’t want to have a ‘dusty’ home – the dust that gathers on the floors can be stirred up by air currents and easily get on your skin and even in your lungs. This is how allergies aggravate or breathing problems appear, and this is why you should keep your floors always clean.

Homes with pets need more advanced cleaning systems that can pick up hair, dander, and dirt left behind by our furry friends. For thorough cleaning and sanitation, see our selection of robot vacuums for pet hair and pick one that can do all the heavy work.

The Roomba i7+ is among the most performant models iRobot has on the market at the moment, and it includes all the features a next-generation vacuum needs. You have intelligent navigation and mapping, quick and efficient cleaning, as well as the latest smart functions that let you control and personalize its operation.

Compared with the other model in our top, the iRobot Roomba 890, this version has better suction and is a lot smarter. It also has a larger bin, but this is not really an important aspect as we are about to see. The company also offers a more expensive model, the Roomba s9+, which is ideal for homes with pets due to 30% wider cleaning brushes, but the i7+ includes a set of super performant brushes as well and is ready to deal with though dirt at a smaller price.

You Won’t Need to Lift a Finger

One thing you notice when looking for the first time at this model is that it comes with a pretty large base. Yes, you won’t be able to hide it under furniture anymore, as it has a height of 19 inches. However, this base is actually a disguised vacuum itself that will suck all the dirt from the bin each time it becomes full.

  • 60 days without dealing with dirt disposal – the base uses bags where it collects the dirt, and based on an average number of utilizations, one bag can last for about 2 months. These are 60 days during which you won’t need to discharge the bin. This is a huge improvement to the old models, which would wait for you at home with a full bin and only half of the house cleaning done.
  • Cleans, then docks, then cleans again – the battery lasts you somewhere between 60 and 75 minutes, then it needs to head back to the base and get more energy. Fortunately, the charging doesn’t take more than 2 hours, and the unit remembers where it left off and returns to finish its job.
  • Follows the schedule – you can design a schedule that would tell it when it needs to vacuum and which rooms are programmed for which day, and it will follow it without getting things mixed.
  • Pet traces become invisible – it uses high-quality rubber brushes that work well on all surfaces to rub and scrub the mess your pets may leave behind. Plus, the 1,800 Pa suction power helps it suck all the dirt from rugs and floors.
vSLAM Is the Ultimate Navigation Technology

The vSlam technology uses a high-performance camera to take pictures around the room and then uses the successive frames to triangulate the position of the objects in the room while remaining aware of its own position to the objects. It is as smart as it sounds, and this is the main reason this model can deliver supreme cleaning execution.

  • Maps multiple stories – it maps while it cleans, but you can set it on mapping mode, and it will take more time looking around to create the maps faster. If you have a multi-story home, it will chart each of them and store all the maps (it can remember up to 10 maps, which is truly impressive, seeing how most of its competitors can only store 3).
  • Recognizes the rooms – once you have the maps on the app, you can label each room so the unit can distinguish between the bedroom and the living room. Then, you can simply select the rooms it needs to clean.
  • You can establish boundaries – the app lets you draw lines around the areas you don’t want to get cleaned, but the package includes the traditional magnetic boundaries as well, so you can place them on the ground to stop access to some rooms.
  • No spot is left uncovered – it moves in a logical pattern that helps it cover the entire floor surface efficiently.
  • Climbs rugs and thresholds – as long as they are lower or equal to 0.78”, it won’t have any problem switching from a hardwood surface to a carpeted one or entering another room.
Personalized Control with Smart Functions

Like most high-end robotic models, Roomba i7+ connects to the internet, but it is compatible with both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi networks, unlike Roborock S5, which works only with 2.4 GHz networks. This option allows you to have better control over the unit, as follows:

  • Access maps through the app – it takes only a few minutes to install the app on your phone and link it to i7+. Here you can see the maps, set boundaries, and arrange the cleaning.
  • Tell Roomba what to do – you can connect it to a home automation system like Alexa or Google Assistant and give it vocal commands. You can tell it to start or stop the cleaning, return to home base, clean a certain room, and more.
  • It learns your habits – it keeps track of your cleaning schedules and gives you suggestions to ensure the house is kept spotless at all times.
Performance Results – What Do Testers Say?

The first thing I wanted to see when testing the iRobot Roomba i7+ was how easy it is for it to connect to my phone, as I had previous not-so-pleasant experiences with other robots that took ages to create a good connection. Well, I was pleased to see that i7+ is not one of them. The app immediately identified it, paired with it, and maintained the link throughout the entire period I performed the tests.

I put Roomba in mapping mode and let it roam around the office (it has a surface of about 1,700 sq. ft.) to learn the premises. It took about 4 trips until the map was 100% complete, and the waiting time was about 10 hours, including the time it needed to recharge between sessions, but I was happy to cross this chore out of my list and got ready to test its promised phenomenal power.

The first test implied spreading some flour over one portion of the floor and leaving the robot to deal with it. To make things more challenging, I added some dried lentils and watched the robot collecting all of them. There was not even a trace of my mess at the end of this experiment, but this was a pretty easy job other robots in this top could do it. So I put Roomba to the scariest test, that of sucking flour from a dense carpet. Once again, I was very impressed, although it needed to run two times over the same spot to get all the flour out of it. This made me think that this is the vacuum you need to have in your house if you have pets.

The bin got full several times, and I loved that it wasn’t me the one who needed to empty it. It just returned to the base, and it sucked the dirt out of it with a whoosh sound, which was quite loud but at least it didn’t last more than a few seconds.

Adrian Nolan, Expert Reviewer and Product Tester

PROS

  • Self-emptying design spares you from emptying the bin for up to 2 months
  • Can map multi-story houses and saves up to 10 maps
  • Strong brush system helps it clean both floors and carpets with excellent efficiency
  • You can integrate it into an automated house
  • Doesn’t bump into objects and cleans in an intelligent pattern due to the advanced navigation technology it integrates

CONS

  • The base makes a loud noise when discharging the bin, but the task only takes a few seconds
  • The run time is rather short, but this is not really a big deal as it returns to its task in only 2 hours

Verdict

Your floors will look impeccable with this model, and the best news is that you don’t even need to be aware of the cleaning process. The i7+ cleans on schedule, returns to base when it is out of power, and resumes once the battery is full. Even better, it empties the dust bin automatically, so you won’t need to deal with this chore more often than once every 2 months.

One of the strongest robots of the moment, D6 was specially designed to aid pet owners to keep their floors and carpets hygienic with the least effort. It has an excellent operation time, seeing how it can cover about 1,292 sq. ft. in 120 minutes, and the big surprise is that it only takes two and a half hours to refill its battery and be ready for another cleaning round. It is a smart unit that boosts impeccable functionality and is ready to handle the toughest jobs.

Amazing Performance in Heavily Carpeted Homes

A common problem with robots is that they often fail in collecting lint, hair, and dust that are buried deep in the carpet fibers. This is the main reason pet owners often feel the need to use a regular vacuum that can help them obtain the optimal cleanness. Nonetheless, the D6 doesn’t have this drawback, being, in fact, one of the most efficient models when dealing with carpeted surfaces, and here’s why:

  • Turbo suction – although a precise suction power value isn’t supplied by the manufacturer, the many positive reviews this machine received talk about its excellent ability to vacuum pet hair, dander, lint, dust, dirt, food crumbles, and so on. It usually picks up the dirt in one go, but if it didn’t manage to remove everything, it remembers and returns, so you don’t have to follow up with a conventional vacuum after it.
  • Bigger brush – this is actually the secret to its performance, as it comes equipped with a roller brush that is 70% larger than the models used by its competitors. The package also includes a spider brush and a spiral combo brush, so you can use the right cleaning method depending on the surface. The brushes are hard enough to thoroughly scrub all the dirt but also delicate enough not to damage the floors or the carpets.
  • Top-notch filter – it ensures that all the dust collected from the floors won’t be put back into the air. D6’s HEPA filter has an efficiency of 99% in filtering contaminants with a diameter down to 0.3 microns, making this model an excellent pick for users who experience allergy effects.
  • Large dust bin – with a capacity of 700 mL, the bin is one of the largest, although, if used in a big house, maybe a multi-store one, you may need to empty it several times. The unit will let you know it is full by sending you a notification on your phone.
  • Multiple surface cleaning – it can shift from carpets to floors or tiles without a problem, continuing to perform just as well on any surface. It can climb barriers as high as 0.75”, so it should be able to cross most thresholds in the house.
  • Corner master – it isn’t all round as most robots are but it presents a square front, which allows it to clean corners more efficiently. Thus, you can expect it to pick dust and dirt that gathers in crevices and other hard-to-reach spots.

The brushless motor helps it navigate quietly in most cases, although, when used in Turbo mode, it can be a bit loud, reaching a noise level of 64 dB

Smart Features

This model comes with a dedicated app that will help you gain access to all its functions and control it from the distance. To use this option, you will need to download the app on your phone and install it. Then, connect the bot to the WiFi in your home with the help of the app (note that it only works with 2.4 GHz networks). You will need to create an account before making the connection. Once everything is set, you will get access to the following functions:

  • Mapping – it uses sensors to read the path it is crossing and can create complex maps of each floor (it supports up to 3). Once the unit has finished mapping the space, you will see the maps on your phone, and you can set no-go boundaries around the areas you don’t want to be cleaned. Use your finger to draw lines around them, and the robot will skip them in its operation.
  • Quick Boost – if the unit runs out of battery before finishing cleaning the entire surface, it can calculate how much energy it needs to finalize the job and will return to the base to recharge only for this purpose. Thus, when it has enough energy, it will go back to cleaning, shortening, this way, the operation time.
  • Scheduling – the app allows you to set the moment when the robot should start cleaning. Thus, you can let it do its job while you are not at home, so it moving around the house won’t disturb you.
  • Voice command – it is compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant, so you will be able to give it vocal commands for more expediency. Moreover, if you own an Apple smartwatch, you can connect it to it and tell it what to do even simpler.

Another amazing aspect is that it is among the few models that can see in the dark, an option that usually comes with an incredibly high price. Thus, if we consider this plus, along with all the other smart features, we can place this robot among the most well-priced models.

PROS

  • Strong suction allows it to efficiently pick up debris and dust from carpets
  • It uses laser sensors to map the space and can even see in the dark
  • Can be programmed to start the cleaning on a certain day and at a certain hour
  • The square front design allows it to clean corners with ease
  • If it runs out of energy while cleaning, it can return to the base for a quick boost and then resume

CONS

  • Debris tends to get stuck in the filter and block it, so it requires often cleaning, even if the bin isn’t full
  • Rather loud when used on the Turbo mode

Verdict

Top-notch technology and a 61W brushless motor are the ones turning this model into a real beast. It can efficiently cover large spaces, clean multiple surfaces, all without bumping into obstacles, thanks to the advanced mapping technology. It is designed to easily fit into corners so there is no dust left on the floor and can keep the dust contained, as it comes with a superior filter. The only notable design flaw it shows is that the filter doesn’t include a protective mesh that could have filtered larger debris, so it tends to get clogged pretty often.

The RoboVac 11S surprises through a high suction power and time-resistant design, which are offered at a more affordable price, making it a nice pick for budget buyers. Although it doesn’t come with the fancier functions presented by the more pricey models, like mapping or voice command, it can provide consistent vacuuming and pick up stubborn dirt as well as hairs or lint.

Low-Profile Design

One of the aspects that make this model so attractive is its height, which is lower, at only 2.8 inches. Thus, it is among the few that can tidy under low couches or coffee tables. It has a diameter of 12.8 inches, which is also shorter when compared with the original model, so it is expected to handle tighter spaces easier.

Besides this design highlight, other qualities recommend it as a nice acquisition:

  • Anti-scratch top surface – made from temperate glass, it is resistant to bumps and doesn’t get easily scratched even if the robot gets stuck under a furniture item that is too low. Plus, it is glossy and contributes to the elegance of the design.
  • Hefty dust bin – it has a volume of 600 mL, being able to gather a lot of dust and debris before requiring to be discharged. The HEPA filter helps keep the allergens inside, ensuring that the air remains clean during the operation.
  • Dependable brushes – it uses a rotating brush and a side brush that prove to be highly reliable when cleaning carpets. Moreover, the package includes 2 extra brushes, so the first replacement is basically for free.
  • Remote – while it doesn’t come with a dedicated app, this model can be operated from afar with the help of an intuitive remote that will help you select the mode (Auto, Spot, Edge, Single Room), turn the unit on and off, and even schedule it to clean at a specific hour.
Super Quiet Performance

It is powered by a 15W motor that makes it both energy-efficient and extremely quiet. In fact, it will only reach a maximum of 55dB, and this when employing the strongest mode. In what regards its performance, it is a true bargain for the price, and here is why:

  • Strong suction – While it cannot match the performance of our first pick, the 1,300 Pa suction power makes it highly dependable, and there’s no doubt that it can pick up lint and hair, even when used on carpets.
  • Drop-sensing technology – it integrates a series of sensors that let it know when stairs or other obstacles approach so it doesn’t fall or bump into the furniture. Thus, even if it doesn’t come with a mapping system, it is still clever enough to find its way around the rooms without your supervision.
  • BoostIQ technology – if it encounters a dirtier zone, it will automatically increase suction to vacuum the mess before moving on.
  • Long-lasting battery – it can work for about 1 hour and a half uninterruptedly, although this time may vary varying on how dirty the surface is. If it needs to employ the BoostIQ option frequently, it will use more power and need to recharge in a shorter time. The charging can last up to 6 hours, which is a bit of a downfall if you have a big house it cannot clean in one run.
  • Scheduling – it’s nice to see this function, although it isn’t the most customizable. You can pick the day and the hour you want it to run, but you cannot select different hours for different days.

When it senses that it needs more power, it revisits to the base on its own, so it will be ready the next time you need it. Unluckily, it cannot recommence its work if it needs to interrupt it, so you will need to reprogram it manually. It is backed by a typical 1-year service assurance.

PROS

  • Great quality-price report
  • Increases suction to 1,300 Pa when it finds super dirty zones to thoroughly clean them
  • Comes with sensors that preclude it from falling down the stairs
  • Glossy anti-scratch top surface helps preserve its band new look for longer
  • Dependable battery allows it to clean a 1,292 sq. ft. in one go

CONS

  • The scheduling function is rather restrictive
  • It cannot resume its job if it interrupts it to recharge

Verdict

It can clean multiple surfaces without demanding involvement on your part and is highly efficient both on hardwood floors and carpets due to the strong brushes and dependable suction. It is a rather basic machine, with no voice control or mapping, but it can navigate without falling down the stairs or bumping into obstacles, and, in general, delivers satisfactory results.

Rating Criteria

Having few or no carpets makes hardwood floors cleaning a little bit easier, as the cleaning area needs less preparation before the robot commences cleaning. Anyway, keeping the floor always clean requires regular vacuuming – and mopping if you want to make them shine. When we chose the best units for this type of floors, we took into consideration some essential aspects that include:

Feature Description Model to Go With
Vacuuming Performance With a high suction power and efficient brushes, a robovac can keep your floors clean without difficulty. To increase their performance, some manufacturers added dirt sensors that help them automatically detect dirty areas and focus more on them. Likewise, some units feature modes – like turbo or max mode – that allow you to upsurge the suction power to pick up dust more efficiently. Combining a strong suction with advanced brushes helps remove dirt and debris in a single pass. Most units have a roller brush that helps eliminate dust, as well as one or two side brushes to sweep the dust from corners and along edges. iRobot Roomba i7+, Roborock S5, iRobot Roomba 890, Ecovacs Deebot N79S
Mopping Function To remove stubborn dirt, floors must be mopped. Besides this, regularly mopping the floors helps sanitize them while preventing scratches. Fortunately, certain robots come with a mop extension or a microfiber mop cloth that can be attached to the unit. Some allow you to opt for either damp or dry mopping, according to your preferences. Of course, few models provide the same cleaning performance when vacuuming and mopping the floors, but having the possibility to also mop the floors is a nice feature. Roborock S5, bObi Classic, ILife V5s Pro
Navigation Technology To navigate the room more proficiently, the robovacs are fitted with various sensors. They help them avoid obstacles and stairs, so the robots will stop and change their cleaning path when detecting objects or height differences. The most advanced units use intelligent software that includes cameras and laser navigation to calculate the most efficient cleaning path. iRobot Roomba i7+, Roborock S5, Ecovacs Deebot N79S, iRobot Roomba 890, Neato Robotics D6
Battery Run Time and Charge Time The battery performance can make a difference when it comes to robotic vacuum cleaners. On average, most units can run between 1 and 2 hours before the battery needs to be recharged, but this difference plays an important role if we consider the size of the house. Small to medium houses can easily be cleaned within an hour or so, but big houses need some extra time to finish the cleaning. The charging time also differs from one model to another. In general, the fastest units can charge in approximately 2 hours while the slowest ones in 5 to 6 hours. iRobot Roomba i7+, Roborock S5, iRobot Roomba 890, Ecovacs Deebot N79S, ILife V5s Pro
Trash Container Capacity Each unit comes with a built-in bin for gathering dust and debris. Those with a bigger dust bin can hold a higher amount of dirt before it needs to be emptied. The size of the trash container is relevant if you live in a big house as the robot will pick up more debris while cleaning. A large dust basket has a capacity of more than 25 ounces. Neato Robotics D6
Filter Efficiency Most units have one or more filters that help capture dust and allergens released into the air when vacuuming. By trapping the airborne particles, the indoor air will be clean and fresh. The HEPA filters are considered the most efficient, as they can capture up to 99.7% of dust particles. bObi Classic, ILife V5s Pro

Frequently Asked Questions

Can robot vacuums replace traditional vacuums?
While all the models in our top can handle hardwood floors without a problem, and there’s no need for you to utilize a traditional vacuum regularly, you should be aware of their limitations. For example, they cannot climb stairs, so here is where you will need a vertical or a canister model. Furthermore, for impeccable carpets, you will need the power of a dedicated unit, particularly if you have pets.

How often should I empty the bin?
It hinges on the size of the dust container. Thus, if there is a large space that you need to be cleaned and your unit offers a medium or small-sized bin, you may even have to empty it during the operation. Usually, a led indicator will let you know if this is the case. Nevertheless, the models we’ve selected have good capacities, so you shouldn’t have to deal with this problem. We recommend emptying them at the end of the cycle, though, to have them prepared for the next one.

Should I run my automatic vacuum on the floors every day?
Unless you have pets, you can choose to vacuum your floors once or twice a week. This will help reduce the amount of dust and allergens in the house while saving your floors from unnecessary exposure to wear.

Can robot vacuums clean in the dark?
It depends on the routing technology employed by the unit. If it is advanced enough, it will rely on sensors and incorporated LEDs that illuminate the path for the camera to capture the images. Nonetheless, this technology comes at a price, and it is quite unlikely that you will find a budget-friendly robot that can operate in dark rooms. Conversely, cheaper units can navigate perfectly in rooms with good light, so if you seek to save money, you just need to make some adjustments to make sure that your unit gets the light it needs.

Are automated vacuums noisy?
Most models reach a sound level that overcomes 55 dB and can go as high as 68 dB or even more. Thus, you cannot expect them to be as quiet as a good air purifier. Yet, in most cases, they are more silent than conventional models.

Do automatic vacuums scratch hardwood floors?
As long as you perform regular upkeep on the unit, this is highly improbable. The only thing that could produce damage to your floors is the front swivel wheel. It tends to gather lint and dirt and, in time, may not roll as it should, thus producing scratches. To avoid this issue, turn your unit upside down and clean the wheel.

How long does it take to clean a room?
It depends on the size of the room. For example, an advanced model like Roborock S5 will get a room measuring up to 2,700 sq. ft. in about 150 minutes. If the room is small, the time, as expected, will be shorter.

How long does the battery last?
It is again a detail specific to each product. The operational time can go from under one hour to 2 hours or more. When inquiring about this aspect, check the charging time as well, as it is also a part of the cleaning process and can prolong it considerably.

How long do robot vacuums last?
High-quality models usually last from 4 to 6 years, while cheaper models can break in under a year. It is a matter of quality, but maintenance is important as well. If you don’t take good care of your product, it may get damaged sooner than expected.

Do automatic vacuums memorize the layout of your house?
Some of them do. They learn the house’s layout and use it every time they do the cleaning. Thus, the operation is quicker as they don’t need to scan the rooms again.

Conclusion

Every robot vacuum reviewed can be considered a good option for cleaning hardwood floors and not only. The models selected by us have several things in common: strong suction, efficient brushes, and improved technology. Furthermore, they are simple to use and durable.
